Diaspora: An Open Source Facebook?

Diaspora is the name of a project which aims to succeed where others have failed, it was in fact designed to create a social network is completely open source a reality that can compete with well established and highly trafficked as Facebook.

While the idea of a social network is not particularly original part of the Diaspora has features that could make an interesting initiative, between them are particularly important:

  • Release all the code of target platform licensed under AGPL (Affero General Public License);
  • Operation based on a decentralized network;

  • The protection of personal data through encryption.

Diaspora, whose first release is scheduled for next summer should be like a cross between Twitter and Facebook, with capabilities for sharing and microblogging, also should provide support for VoIP and authentication OpenID.
