Backlinks are incoming links come from the same site or externally. The number of links pointing to your site is an indication of its popularity and its importance in the eyes of search engines. Some search engines, especially Google, give more credit to websites that have lots of quality backlinks, and consider these sites as more relevant than others in the pages of search results.
When search engines calculate the relevance of a site for a keyword, they take into account the number of quality links pointing to this site. So you should not just settle for inbound links, it is the quality of the incoming link counts. A search engine takes into account the content of sites to determine the quality of a link. When inbound links to your site from other sites and these sites have content corresponding to the content of your site, these inbound links are considered more relevant to your site. If a webpage contains inbound links from sites that do not address the same subject as yours, they will be considered less relevant.
For example, if a webmaster who has a website dealing with dog training, receive a backlink from another site about dogs, a search engine will evaluate the link as being more relevant than a link from a site say that speaks of race cars. Recently, the search engine criteria for assessing quality incoming links became even harsher, thank you to unscrupulous webmasters trying to earn inbound links by deceptive or sneaky techniques, for example using hidden links, or automatically generated pages whose sole purpose is to provide inbound links to their websites. These pages are called link farms (link farms), and they are not only ignored by search engines, but a link to a link farm could cost you the banning of your site.
Before, it was enough to make a link exchange to increase the popularity of a site and to get a good ranking in search results. But now that link exchange has been a goal of Google in its last years, they must use this method with caution.
